Moving to Thailand from Vancouver

We sold everything and moved to Thailand

The biggest reason why we moved is, my husband didn’t want to be cold anymore. Winter is too long.

I had some women’s health issues, and a minor surgery in 2020. Being annoyingly gluten sensitive, changing my diet was on my mind. (There is a study that shows Japanese women who moves to western country has higher rate of having women’s health issues from the diet change). I was already cooking Japanese food everyday with lots of fermented food. However, since my husband likes to eat out, it was very frustrating that easy quick bites in Vancouver are mostly things I can’t eat.

Being born in Japan, I expect good quality food for good price. However it’s a tall order to achieve in Vancouver. Everything from grocery (organic meat!) to eating out is VERY expensive and I didn’t find value in that. It was fine pre-COVID. We didn’t even question it. We were relatively happy with everything and had no complaints, but during pandemic, when all that Vancouver has to offer has been limited, we questioned why we’re there.

So it resulted in moving to Thailand where cost of living is fraction of Vancouver and have fresh rice based diet.

Kitchen Renovation

We sold our beloved home of 11 years.

It was a stressful thing to overcome, but once we sold it, It felt like it was just a box. I let go of my attachment to the beloved unit and was off to races with packing, because we were leaving in 2 weeks. lol.

Are we crazy? Probably.

Everything we chose to bring fit in 2 large suitcases, 2 carry on suit cases, 1 box and 1 duffel bag. We didn’t pay extra for luggage allowance.

We are at Alternative State Quarantine ASQ hotel in Bangkok now, doing our 14 day quarantine.

We’re at Hyatt Place, king suite room. It’s probably bigger than our old apartment, minus the kitchen. The view is spectacular. There is nothing tall in front of us, so I see a lot of tall buildings in the fair distance and so much greenery. The sunrise looks so nice with changing colours of the sky. We’re on our 9th day, and not even close to getting sick of being here. We play games, catch up on sleep, eat delicious food, and HIIT exercising.

I cannot believe that I am eating papayas everyday! Such a treat.

That’s my typical breakfast. I only choose Asian breakfast. Thai omelette, Chinese congee or Japanese noodles. They are all good! I like Chinese congee with chicken balls the best because they come with soy milk.

My favorite soup so far is Tom Kah Gai, chiken coconut soup. It taste so good with rice!

I would like to note for somebody thinking to move from Vancouver to Thailand, we flew with JAL Japan Airlines. It was fantastic. I almost cried because every staff member was so nice and so professional. I am used to Canadian and European airlines being oh so very rude. Flying JAL, there were so much smiles and common sense that I desperately missed. I love the Omotenashi spirit.
